The Grand Palace

There are events, experiences, sites or emotions that cannot be aptly described through words, gestures, facial expressions and body language. These Grand Palace of Thailand and The Temples of Cambodia fall into that category. This one, while absolutely spectacular, is tinged with some degree of pessimism. The Grand Palace was built beginning in 1782 when the new King moved the capital to what is today Bangkok. It covers 218 000 square metres with a surrounding wall measuring 19 000 metres. A marvel of engineering and beauty, one wonders at the scale of capital investment that might have served the people better in other projects. The detail on the buildings is mind boggling. The palace itself is not ornate, despite its size.

The Emerald Buddha is probably the most breathtaking object I have ever seen  The Buddha itself is small but the base, about 8 metres tall in simply indescribable in ornate detailing  Unfortunately no pictures are allowed. I got a shot, not realizing it, before I entered the building. Maybe Bob can work his photo magic to enhance this pic.
