On to Cambodia

 An 8+ hour van ride from Bangkok to Siem Reap. The border crossing took about 45 minutes. I paid $90 CDN for the mandatory visa. I did a tourist Evisa which cost me $90 CDN. Was $38US at the border but would have taken time. Our hotel is very nice with a few bugs toodling around but no bedbugs. In SE Asia, you insert your card or your old school key fob into a slot to start power in your room. All lights and AC go off until you return and insert. A great energy saving idea, but sadly no recycling.


Off to visit a floating village and then “Spider City”, where one consumes a variety of  insect delicacies. Will I put on my big boy pants and be Spider-Man?  This afternoon and evening are free. A nice break as I’ve been walking well over 20 000 steps a day.  Am signed up for a cooking class this afternoon. Had to choose between that and visiting a facility that trains rats to find land mines, Cirque de Soleil Cambodia or another old Wat. Figured I could google those, but not the experience of cooking. Hope everyone is well!

The Fat Lady (and me?) Sings

A deep dive into an alien culture is a first for me. I not only saw as a tourist, I learned as a traveller -  about people, about history, about similarities and differences, about me. I have a deep respect for these SE Asian cultures. There were Jamie challenges to overcome - the constant demanding requests to buy or give money for an unasked service (a man on the street in Ho Chi Minh City started to clean the sole of my shoe with a toothbrush and wanted money; a 6 or 7 year old girl put a live tarantula on my chest and wanted 1000 riel, I didn’t even know it was there); the bargaining and negotiating over price (there is a locals price and a tourist price; I’m lousy at that and rarely did); often no sticker prices or receipts given (making for an interesting trip through customs); the lack of personal space given (street vendors often grab your arm of block your exit; sometimes members of the tour group are nose to your nose); the kamikaze scooter/motorcycle cowboys and cowgirls...

Khan San Road

 We acquired our rooms, showered (Halleujah!) and got some much needed sleep, all 3 zzzzing through alarms. I’ve been to sardine and energy packed Times Square. A 10 minute walk from our hotel is Khao San Road, made famous in the di Caprio movie, The Beaches. It’s a 3 block area where young backpackers, wanderers, nomads, “gypsies, tramps and thieves” gather due to cheap hostels, bars, dope and erotic pleasures. I felt quite the senior citizen pushing through the crowds of teens and twenty somethings. This night there were perhaps more tourists than “hippies”. Although the scene has been somewhat gentrified, we were advice to be aware of pickpockets, drunks and scammers. Many well to do tourists were getting leg/foot massages. Street vendors receive a shout out for concocting delicious looking food (well some not so delicious looking fried snakes on a stick) on small carts and tables.
